How Terraform works
HashiCorp describes the core Terraform workflow in three steps: you write the configuration as code, run plan to preview the changes, and run apply to create the real resources. Before the first plan, terraform init prepares the working directory and downloads the provider plugins the configuration uses. After each apply, Terraform records what it manages in the state, and the next plan compares the code against that state.
In a good course you run this loop many times against a real cloud account, including the parts that go wrong, like drift, state locking and imports.

How I chose
I used the same methodology as the other guides. For Terraform I looked at four things: hands-on practice with the plan and apply loop, freshness for current Terraform versions, coverage of state and modules, and the entry level. For now I only compare courses on Udemy. I read every fact on the course page on September 28, 2026.
I left out Edward Viaene's AWS Infrastructure as Code With Terraform, last updated in April 2025 and rated 4.5, and Kalyan Reddy Daida's course with 50 practical demos, rated 4.5 with about 1,800 reviews. The four above are fresher or better reviewed.

Do I need to know a cloud provider before learning Terraform?
It helps. Terraform creates resources through a provider, and most courses use AWS for their labs. KodeKloud's beginner course runs its labs in the browser, so you can start without an account.
How long is the Terraform Associate exam?
1 hour, with multiple-choice questions, taken online with a proctor. It tests Terraform 1.12.
How long is the certification valid?
